UK Geology Explorer
Interactive 3D geological cross-sections and boreholes for Great Britain
Overview
UK Geology Explorer is a browser-based viewer that brings BGS UK3D geology data to life as interactive cross-sections and borehole. The app is designed for rapid visual exploration of subsurface structure, while keeping data access simple and open through a public web interface.
Users can explore geological sections, inspect borehole lithologies, and compare different visual contexts with responsive controls built for desktop and mobile screens. The goal is to make complex geological datasets easier to understand without requiring specialist desktop software.
A live chronostratigraphic column — rendered from the ICS International Chronostratigraphic Chart — sits alongside the viewer and highlights the geological age of any unit you hover over, from Eon down to Age/Stage level. The column scrolls automatically to keep the active age band in view.
Cross-sections
Browse section-by-section geological geometry with fast model streaming and click-to-focus navigation.
Boreholes
Inspect multi-interval borehole cylinders and interval-level metadata directly in the 3D scene.
Interpretation
Toggle vertical exaggeration and map context to examine subsurface patterns at regional and local scales.
